| About Breakbulk Institute |
 |
The Journal of Commerce, a publication of UBM Global Trade, established the Breakbulk Institute in 2007 to create an effective training, education and employee mentoring platform for companies involved in marine transportation of heavy lift, project cargo and non-containerized general cargo, in short breakbulk cargo.
This highly specialized maritime sector requires specialized knowledge and experience often lacking in new-entrants into the field, and is changing and evolving at a pace that would make refresher education beneficial for seasoned professionals. The industry has also experienced progressively greater difficulty in attracting qualified individuals with sufficient background and experience to work efficiently in the industry.
In an effort to help the industry overcome these challenges and to foster a global educational standard within the breakbulk sector, the Breakbulk Institute (BBI) was created with active support from a number of key industry carriers, forwarders and shippers. The Institute will create an on-line training platform based on cutting edge e-learning technology and course content. To accomplish this goal CBM has teamed up with a Teledata Marine Systems, a leading global developer of maritime e-learning programs. The first course of the Breakbulk Institute, called Breakbulk Fundamentals, will be launched in October 2008.
The Breakbulk Institute Advisory Board is comprised of industry veterans from throughout the field of breakbulk shipping, representing, shippers, carriers, logistics providers, suppliers and industry associations as well as maritime education providers. The Board is instrumental in providing input, guidance and direction in the development of the Breakbulk Institute’s curriculum and e-learning programs |
